This article explores the rise of the social-purpose economy, an innovative student-designed Mars rover from Hawaiʻi, Discord's game bots and the eclipse.
The purpose economy is becoming a force in Canada and around the world. Now is the time to help it overcome any growing pains and highlight the purpose gains to put business and humanity on a sustainable path at scale.
The purpose ecosystem is coming of age. You can see this when you start coming across academic research defining it and studying its potential and constraints, when you watch it come to fruition through your or others’ deliberate efforts, or when over 100 CEOs of purpose-driven companies endorse a Call to Purpose
A squadron of undergraduates from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa has made significant headway in their quest to explore the Martian terrain with their own robotic creation. The team, guided by Frankie Zhu, an Assistant Researcher at the Hawaiʻi Institute of Geophysics and Planetology, and managed by Micah Chang, has engineered a robotic rover with the potential to aid astronauts in future Mars missions.
This group, known as Team RoSE (Robotic Space Exploration), is preparing to pit their machine against global competition as they aim to participate in the University Rover Challenge, a highly respected collegiate robotics contest. The event scheduled for late May in Utah, draws some of the brightest minds from around the planet to showcase innovations that could shape the future of space exploration.
While at GDC 2024 I sat down with veteran game designer Timothy Johnson, Founder of Exjin Studios, to catch up on his most recent game: Chat Wars, an AI-powered multiplayer real-time game for Discord. I had interviewed Timothy back in the fall about launching Exjin right as he was getting ready to debut Chat Arcade and their launch title Tribunal Tactics at DreamHack Atlanta: a place where “Gamers from all multiverses and backgrounds connect for a weekend of experiences” (Discord “Chat Arcade” by ExJin Studios Blows my Mind, so it was great to sit down again and see what he had learned since launch).

On April 8, 2024, a NASA photographer captured the total solar eclipse in Dallas. A small part of North America, from Mexico’s Pacific coast to the Atlantic coast of Newfoundland, Canada, saw the total solar eclipse, while all North America and parts of Central America and Europe saw a partial solar eclipse. The next total solar eclipse that will travel across the lower 48 states from coast to coast is in 2045.
